Leave it to the Italians to come up with a revolutionary tricycle design. New to the US market, the OKO Tricycle by Italy's Italtrike, moves forward when you pedal it -- which should satisfy most 2-to-5-year-olds. What turns on their tough-to-impress parents is the combination of style, comfort and safety the OKO provides for their pint-sized Lance Armstrong.
The design is based on a study of child ergonomics -- the cradle shaped frame allows for ease in getting on and off since there is no crossbar to overcome, while the extra large wheels with pliable tires and amply-padded seat allows for a smooth ride regardless of terrain. The top of the frame, which shelters from both the sun and rain, is removable. The seat and handlebar have nine adjustments for ideal positioning, and the unique placement of the pedals (which are not on the front wheel) give comfort for the biggest or littlest of riders.
For parents, a horseshoe-shaped push-bar and steering lock lend a sense of guidance when using the trike with smaller children. For added safety, the OKO boasts a 3-point harness belt, lever brake on the front wheel, and a 45-degree right and left topple-proof steering stop.
And how about the sassy orange color? A crowd-pleaser all around.
